Is Ningxia Red “Heaty”?

In the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) world, food is classified as according to its energetic effects rather than according to its component parts. Certain foods are viewed as warming and nourishing while others are seen as cooling and eliminating. Furthermore, some foods are have yin and yang building properties. So what’s this warming and cooling foods concepts? When you eat cooling foods, they are adding cooling effects to your body and eating warm foods will add warming effects to your body. Therefore, warming and cooling foods can be used to balance the body which may be deficient in yin or yang.

Some folks have reported that after drinking Ningxia Red, there was a tendency to feel “heaty” effects, or yin deficiency. Yin represents the energy that is responsible for moistening and cooling bodily functions. When this energy is depleted your body begins to show signs of “heating up”. This is not a true heat but rather a lack of the moistening and cooling functions that are necessary to maintain a healthy balance. Does it sound like Ningxia Red contain warming foods? Perhaps, let’s talk a look at each ingredient found in Ningxia Red and break it down, shall we?

Main Ingredient of the Day: Chinese Wolfberry from Ningxia, China. Typically, chinese wolfberries are known to be nourishing yin which would point to The wolfberries is formulated in the form of puree, hence, it would most likely retain the cooling effects for the body.

Cooling food has effects of clearing heat and toxins, cooling and calming the blood and nourishing yin.

– Cherry Juice Concentrate

The flavor of Ningxia Red being sour also points towards the cooling effects..
To sum it up, the “heatiness” experienced could be attributed to how the different ingredients were prepared and the form that they exist in the drink as a whole. As almost most ingredients are either in the puree, concentrated or extract form, this would skew towards warming effects as according to TCM practices. Warming foods or ingredients have the effects of raising the yang, energy (qi) of organs and warming and improving the circulation and dispelling the cold.

To add on, Aronia berries/Aronia juice has the tendency to improve circulation of blood and the lymph in the lymphatic system. This may result in “heaty” encounters such as the body feeling hot, increased perspiration resulting from increased circulation due to higher metabolism.

If you feel the “heaty” effects of Ningxia Red, you can reduce the warming nature of Ningxia Red by changing up the serving method. You can choose to refrigerate the drink, add ice or ice blend it, or add cooling fruit juices such as lemon, watermelon, orange, lime, pear and pineapple.
